Apple TV+ has announced the release date for its forthcoming limited series The Essex Serpent, based on Sarah Perry’s period novel of the same name. Described as a mysterious Victorian romance, the drama has now been slated to make its debut on May 13, with the first two episodes being released.
The date announcement also came with the release of several The Essex Serpent photos, providing us with our first look at Golden Globe winners Claire Danes as Cora and Tom Hiddleston as Will Ransome.

The Essex Serpent is directed by Clio Barnard (Dark River) from a screenplay written by Anna Symon (Mrs. Wilson). It stars Claire Danes, Tom Hiddleston, Frank Dillane, Hayley Squires, Jamael Westman, Clémence Poésy, Dixie Egerickx, and Michael Jibson.
“The miniseries follows newly widowed Cora who, having being released from an abusive marriage, relocates from Victorian London to the small village of Aldwinter in Essex, intrigued by a local superstition that a mythical creature known as the Essex Serpent has returned to the area,” reads the synopsis.

The six-episode series adaptation is executive produced by Barnard, Symon, Jamie Laurenson, Hakan Kousetta, Patrick Walters, Iain Canning, and Emile Sherman with Andrea Cornwell set as a producer. It is produced by See-Saw Films for Apple TV+.
