Netflix has officially announced that production on the upcoming second season of Eric Heiserrer’s popular fantasy series adaptation of Shadow and Bone has finally begun in Budapest. In addition, the streamer has also confirmed the addition of four new cast members including Lewis Tan (Mortal Kombat), Anna Leong Brophy (Traces), Patrick Gibson (The OA), and Jack Wolfe (The Witcher) who have been tapped as series regulars for Shadow and Bone Season 2. Tan, Brophy, Gibson, and Wolfe are set to portray the respective roles of Tolya Yul-Bataar, Tamar Kir-Bataar, Nikolai Lantsov, and Wylan Hendriks.

These announcements came with the release of the first Season 2 cast photos and video, featuring lead stars Jesse Mei Li, Ben Barnes, and more as they introduced the new characters to fans and teased the start of filming.

Based on Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse novels, Shadow and Bone is created and executive produced by Oscar nominee Eric Heisserer (Arrival, Bird Box), who also serves as the writer and showrunner. It stars Jesse Mei Li as Alina, Archie Renaux as Mal, Freddy Carter as Kaz Brekker, Amita Suman as Inej Ghafa, Kit Young as Jesper, Ben Barnes as Darkling, and Zoë Wanamaker as Baghra.

“The series is set in a war-torn world and centers on orphan and lowly soldier Alina Starkov as she unleashes an extraordinary power that could be the key to setting her country free from the monstrous threat of Shadow Fold, though finds herself torn from everything she knows to train as part of the Grisha, an elite army of magical soldiers,” reads the synopsis. “Struggling to get a grasp on her powers while avoiding a crew of charismatic criminals out to get her, Alina learns that allies and enemies might be one in the same and that nothing in the lavish world is what it seems.”

Additional cast includes Sujaya Dasgupta, Danielle Galligan, Daisy Head, Simon Sears, Calahan Skogman, Kevin Eldon, Julian Kostov, Luke Pasqualino, Jasmine Blackborow, and Gabrielle Broos.

The Shadow and Bone series hails from 21 Laps Entertainment, with Bardugo, 21 Laps’ Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, Dan Cohen and Josh Barry, Pouya Shahbazian and Lee Toland Krieger sets as executive producers.
