MANILA, Philippines—The Philippine national women’s football team put up a commendable effort despite a 4-0 loss to a formidable Australian side in Group B of the AFC Asian Cup Monday at Mumbai Football Arena.

Riding high after a stunning win over Thailand three nights ago, the Philippines held its own especially in the first half behind another solid defensive stand.

Anchoring the defense was goalkeeper Kiara Fontanilla, who had a rousing debut for the Philippines, which is ranked 53 places below Australia.

Chandler McDaniel, the hero against Thailand, had the golden opportunity to put the Philippines ahead just a few minutes into the match but her shot sailed wide.

It took the 51st minute before Australia broke the deadlock with Sam Kerr heading one home off a Steph Catley’s corner.

Kerr now has six goals in two matches after scoring five in Australia’s 18-0 whipping of Indonesia on Friday.

Australia quickly doubled its lead after an own goal by Philippine defender Dominique Randle.

The Philippines faces Indonesia next on Thursday. The top two finishers in each group advance to the knockout stage.
