Olympic Gold Medalist and NCAA Champion Gable Steveson was selected in this year’s WWE Draft even though he hasn’t worked a single pro wrestling match yet.

Steveson was one of the late picks in the draft and sent to the Raw roster. While he wasn’t at the show, he was seen reacting at his home with his parents cheering him on.

Fightful Select reports Steveson was listed on the internal run sheet as being drafted. It was said that there were many surprised faces when they saw the run sheet, which actually listed him as having an “entrance.” It’s still unclear why he didn’t travel to the show.

Per the report, the decision to have him part of the draft wasn’t secret as talent, staff and production knew the day before the show. WWE did want to keep the surprise factor of the announcement so that’s why he wasn’t featured on the graphic of wrestlers to be picked.

As noted, Steveson will continue full-time amateur wrestling while attending college and he will train for the NCAA tournament. Once he graduates then he will start full-time training at the Performance Center.

In the meantime, WWE is setting up a training facility for him near his home.
