“College GameDay” will head to its third neutral-site game of the season on Saturday when it sets up shop outside Soldier Field in Chicago to preview No. 12 Notre Dame vs. No. 18 Wisconsin.

Moreover, Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso , Desmond Howard, David Pollack and Co. will preview their third straight game involving a Big Ten team, following the previous episodes that included Auburn-Penn State and Iowa State-Iowa. Both teams should view this as a must-win, considering the College Football Playoff implications involved with a loss. A defeat by Wisconsin (1-1) would immediately end any chance the Badgers have of making the Playoff, and in a year Ohio State looks the weakest it has in years.

The same could be said of Notre Dame which, despite its 3-0 record, has dropped several spots in the polls due to subpar performances against Florida State, Toledo and Purdue. The Fighting Irish can feasibly make the Playoff with one loss, but its overall strength of schedule does them no favors if they lose.

A potential Playoff spot isn’t the only storyline from Saturday’s game: It will also be a reunion between Notre Dame quarterback Jack Coan and his former team. Coan threw for 3,278 yards and 23 touchdowns to eight interceptions across three seasons in Madison, Wisc. — including two years as a starter in 2018 and ’19 — but did not play in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. He announced his decision to transfer in the offseason and has made an immediate impact for the Fighting Irish, throwing for 828 yards and eight touchdowns to two interceptions.

The Fighting Irish will likely need every bit of his play-making ability against Wisconsin, which despite its loss to Penn State earlier this year has been stout on defense, allowing only 11.5 points per game (two touchdowns on the year).

With that, here’s everything you need to know as “College GameDay” makes its way to Chicago to preview the game:

Where is ‘College GameDay’ location for Week 4?

  • Location: Chicago
  • Matchup: No. 12 Notre Dame vs. No. 18 Wisconsin

“GameDay” will make only its second trip to the Windy City, the first coming in 2010 for an intrastate showdown between No. 25 Northwestern and Illinois at Wrigley Field (a 48-27 win for the Illini). It will be the program’s first ever trip to Soldier Field, home of the NFL’s Chicago Bears.

As for the teams, this will be Notre Dame’s 33rd appearance, having gone 14-18 previously. That includes a 10-15 mark when the Irish and their opponents are ranked and 0-2 record in neutral games (2013 BCS Championship game and 2020 ACC Championship game).

This will be Wisconsin’s 20th appearance on “GameDay” — the Badgers have a 7-12 record in those appearances. That also includes a 5-12 record in ranked matchups and 1-6 mark in neutral games.

Notre Dame vs. Wisconsin has never been the featured matchup on “GameDay.”
