Owen Hart was regarded as one of the most gifted in-ring competitors to ever grace a WWE ring. Unfortunately, his life was snuffed out as he tragically lost his life at Over The Edge in 1999 as he fell to his death.
Owen Hart had doubts about the deadly Blue Blazer stunt that ultimately took his life as well. His passing led to a lot of controversy that carries on even today. Owen Hart’s wife Martha sued WWE for wrongful death, and Vince McMahon sued her back.
As reported earlier, AEW will be partnering up with the Owen Hart Foundation to honor the legacy of the legendary wrestler. The working relationship will include the annual Owen Hart Cup Tournament in AEW. The winner of the tournament will receive a Cup known as “The Owen.”
It seems there are those who are not all that happy regarding this decision and feel as if AEW is making money off of Owen Hart’s legacy and nothing else.
While speaking on Jim Cornette’s Drive Thru, Jim Cornette took aim at AEW’s detractors for working together with the Owen Hart Foundation.
”They are giving Owen’s widow a palatable way to do all the things that fans have wanted, for him to have merchandise and be featured in video games, be recognized, keep his memory alive. Owen Hart Cup, hopefully they won’t put it on Jelly Nutella or our little dog pockets for heaven’s sake. But she’s doing everything that they’ve wanted, just not with the company responsible for the situation to begin with. As my mother would say, people would complain if you hung them with a brand new rope. What more do you want? You ain’t going to get nothing folks, I’m talking about all the people b***hing about this.”
AEW’s partnership with the Owen Hart Foundation will certainly benefit the company in the long run and many fans agree with his notion as well.
