Bryan Danielson has been open about how it was a hard decision to leave WWE in order to join AEW.

Danielson recently did an interview with NYPost.com. This is where he discussed his relationship with Vince McMahon.

“Vince McMahon was very protective of me in the sense of protecting my health kind of stuff and I get that.”

Danielson continued by noting that WWE’s relationship with his health is different as he can go harder in AEW then he could in WWE even though Tony Khan knows his concussion history, but doesn’t have that experience in real-time as WWE went through it with him.

He noted that the WWE perspective is coming in a very loving way and it’s not a negative way, which is what McMahon would tell him. Danielson recalled how McMahon likened him to a  racehorse who needs a bit in their mouth because some racehorses need a bit in their mouth because you need to be able to control the racehorse.

He continued with this analogy by stating that if you don’t have that then they’ll run themselves into the ground. He noted that was a big point in him signing with AEW.

“Besides my wife, he (Vince) was the first person I told. He and I have a great relationship. That was actually one of the harder things about leaving. Because I had such a positive experience in WWE. From my perspective, I have a lot of respect and love for him and that was one of the hardest things. Like, I don’t want him to think I’m betraying him or anything like that. It was really hard. One of the main reasons why it took me so long to make the decision was my loyalty to Vince.”

Danielson just worked his first AEW match on Wednesday’s Dynamite: Grand Slam where he went to a 30-minute draw with World Champion Kenny Omega in a non-title match.
